SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 10

RECOGNIZING THE WEEK OF MARCH 27 THROUGH APRIL 3 OF 2017 AS HOMELESSNESS AWARENESS WEEK IN DELAWARE

WHEREAS, over 2,000 people are served by homeless shelters, transitional housing facilities, and homeless outreach teams in Delaware each year; and

WHEREAS, the amount of people experiencing homelessness in Delaware increased by 5.8% between 2014 and 2015 even as overall homelessness decreased in the United States; and

WHEREAS, 3,847 Delaware students experienced homelessness during the 2014-2015 school year, more than any previous year; and

WHEREAS, 11 percent of people experiencing homelessness in Delaware are veterans of the United States Armed Forces; and

WHEREAS, there are over half a million individuals experiencing homelessness across America; and

WHEARAS, homeless populations are especially vulnerable in low temperatures; and

WHEREAS, Code Purple is a statewide movement that helps people who are homeless find a place of refuge or shelter when winter weather conditions become too dangerous for individuals or families to remain outside; and

WHEREAS, Code Purple sites offer safe, warm shelter, meals, toiletries, and resources, and are staffed by trained volunteers.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 149 th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the week of March 27 through April 3 of 2017 is recognized as Homelessness Awareness Week in Delaware.

SYNOPSIS

This resolution recognizes the week of March 23 through April 3 of 2017 as Homelessness Awareness Week in Delaware.
