141st GENERAL ASSEMBLY

SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 6

MOURNING THE PASSING OF PAMELA CUNNINGHAM COPELAND, AND NOTING HER LIFE ACHIEVEMENTS.

WHEREAS, the General Assembly of the State of Delaware was greatly saddened to learn of the January 25, 2001 passing of Pamela Cunningham Copeland; and

WHEREAS, Pamela Cunningham Copeland left a lasting legacy to the citizens of the State of Delaware through her lifetime achievements in the areas of gardening and land conservation, among others; and

WHEREAS, in the 1930's, Pamela Cunningham Copeland, with her late husband, Lammot du Pont Copeland, created Mount Cuba and its gardens which have evolved into the Mount Cuba Center for the Study of Piedmont Flora, an endowed foundation dedicated to the preservation and propagation of native plant material of the Piedmont region, which will remain for the public enjoyment; and

WHEREAS, Pamela Cunningham Copeland was also instrumental in managing the Red Clay Reservation; and

WHEREAS, Pamela Cunningham Copeland was also a great collector of figurines of Chinese export ware, which are now on display at the Peabody & Essex Museum of Salem, Massachusetts; and

WHEREAS, Pamela Cunningham Copeland was First Regent of Gunston Hall Plantation, the Home of Founding Father George Mason, and also co-authored "The Five George Masons: Patriots and Planters of Virginia and Maryland; and

WHEREAS, Pamela Cunningham Copeland was a major benefactor and trustee of the Henry Francis du Pont Wintherthur Museum and Gardens, served as a trustee of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, served on the Committee for the Preservation of the White House, the White House Preservation Fund, the Council of the American Association of Museums and the Historical Society of Delaware; and

WHEREAS, Pamela Cunningham Copeland's life achievements will be enjoyed by countless Delawareans into the future:

NOW THEREFORE;

BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the 141st General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives thereof concurring therein, honor the lifelong achievements and legacy of Pamela Cunningham Copeland.
