AN ACT TO AMEND TITLE 1 OF THE DELAWARE CODE TO RECOGNIZE MILITARY SPOUSE APPRECIATION DAY.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF DELAWARE:

WHEREAS, the liberty and security that citizens of this Country enjoy today are a direct result of the vigilance and patriotic service given by members of the United States Armed Forces throughout our Nation’s great history; and

WHEREAS, the sacrifices made by members of the United States Armed Forces and the family members who support them have preserved the freedoms which make our Nation unique in the world community; and

WHEREAS, in 1984, President Reagan proclaimed the Friday before Mother's Day of each year to be Military Spouse Appreciation Day in recognition of the "countless personal sacrifices" military spouses have made in support of the Armed Forces; and

WHEREAS, in 2004, the United States Congress passed a resolution proclaiming May to be National Military Appreciation Month, encouraging all Americans to honor the men and women of our Armed Services and to remember those who gave their lives in defense of freedom, together with their families; and

WHEREAS, the House of Representatives of the 143rd and 144th General Assemblies recognized Military Spouse Appreciate Day by resolution; and

WHEREAS, as an expression of sincere gratitude for the countless sacrifices made by military spouses, the General Assembly believes it appropriate to permanently designate the Friday before Mother’s Day of each year as Military Spouse Appreciate Day.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF DELAWARE:

Section 1. Amend Chapter 6, Title 1 of the Delaware Code by adding a new "§606" thereto as follows:

"§606. Military Spouse Appreciation Day.

The following day shall be commemorated annually in this State by appropriate ceremonies: The Friday before Mother’s Day, known as Military Spouse Appreciation Day.
