SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 94

RECOGNIZING JUNE 2023 AS ALZHEIMER’S AND BRAIN AWARENESS MONTH.

WHEREAS, Alzheimer’s disease, a degenerative brain disease and the most common form of dementia, tragically robs individuals of their memories and leads to progressive mental and physical impairments; and

WHEREAS, there are no known treatments to prevent or cure Alzheimer’s disease; and

WHEREAS, an estimated 6.7 million people aged 65 and over have Alzheimer’s disease; and approximately 26,000 Delawareans are currently living with Alzheimer’s; and

WHEREAS, 1 in 3 seniors die with Alzheimer’s or another dementia and nearly half of all caregivers who provide help to older adults do so for someone living with Alzheimer's or another dementia; and

WHEREAS, the direct costs to American society of caring for those with Alzheimer’s is valued at over $320 billion, while more than 11 million caregivers provide $271 billion of unpaid care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia; and

WHEREAS, in Delaware, approximately 31,000 family members and friends cared for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other dementia, providing 45 million hours of unpaid care, with the annual value of this caregiving totaling $885 million; and

WHEREAS, the State of Delaware recognizes the challenges faced by the individuals, families, friends, and caregivers dealing with Alzheimer’s disease; and

WHEREAS, researchers continue to search for a cause and a cure for the disease; and

WHEREAS, the State of Delaware recognizes the efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association to promote awareness to fight Alzheimer’s disease and all other dementia; and

WHEREAS, the Alzheimer’s Association has declared the month of June 2023 Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month to help spread global awareness of the Alzheimer’s Association’s vision of imagining a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the month of June 2023 be recognized as Alzheimer's and Brain Awar eness Month.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all residents of Delaware are urged to wear purple to help spread global awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and the ongoing efforts to rid the world of Alzheimer's and all other dementia.

SYNOPSIS

This resolution recognizes June 2023 as Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month and urges all Delawareans to wear purple to help spread awareness of Alzheimer's and all other dementia.
