SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 41
RECOGNIZING 2023 AS THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE SEAFORD KIWANIS CLUB.
WHEREAS, in 1923, a group of civic-minded Seaford-area men joined together to form the Seaford Kiwanis Club; and
WHEREAS, the men and women of the Seaford Kiwanis Club will be celebrating the Club’s 100 year anniversary on Saturday, April 29th; and
WHEREAS, the Seaford club, sponsored by the Wilmington Kiwanis, became the 1,000 th such club in the USA and the second Kiwanis Club in Delaware; and
WHEREAS, Joseph H. Cox, a former Seaford Mayor and a dry-goods businessman, was the first president of the Kiwanis which included fifty charter members; and
WHEREAS, the Seaford Kiwanis Club over the decades has contributed greatly to improvements in the city under the original Kiwanis International motto of 'We Build’; and
WHEREAS, Dr. John W. Lynch became the chairman of a special Kiwanis committee to participate with other organizations to build what would be known as the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital; and
WHEREAS, the Seaford Kiwanians sponsored new Kiwanis Clubs in several area towns, including Rehoboth Beach, Georgetown, Bridgeville, and Salisbury; and
WHEREAS, the Kiwanis Park in Seaford is the site of the Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies during which hundreds of people gather to honor the sacrifices of our military men and women and their families; and
WHEREAS, in 2005, when Kiwanis International changed its motto from 'We Build' to 'Serving the Children of the World’ the Seaford Kiwanis Club honored that new motto by providing scholarships and inspirational leadership in countless ways to serve young people; and
WHEREAS, when the ‘Wilmington Boys Club’ became interested in becoming a state-wide organization in the early 1990s, it approached Seaford Kiwanians Ron Breeding and Steve Schwartz, and the result was soon ‘The Boys and Girls Club of Delaware’; and
WHEREAS, for more than 20 years the Seaford Kiwanis worked with the Bible School for Special People in cooperation with Christ Lutheran Church for not just Bible studies, but also bowling and other activities; and
WHEREAS, in 1994 Kiwanis President Ron MacArthur, along with former Kiwanis President Ron Breeding, envisioned a River Walk along the Nanticoke that in the not-too-distant future will lead to an Oyster House Amphitheater; and
WHEREAS, many of the improvements in the Seaford area are the result of the combined efforts of civic-minded men and women working together, which include the Seaford Kiwanis Club.
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 152 nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that we hereby extend this expression of gratitude and best wishes to the Seaford Kiwanis Club on its 100th Anniversary for the club’s service to the Seaford area, Sussex County, the State of Delaware, and the international community.
SYNOPSIS
This Senate Concurrent Resolution recognizes 2023 as the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Seaford Kiwanis Club.
