HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 43

RECOGNIZING MAY 3, 2023, AS “WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY” IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, World Press Freedom Day was first proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993; and

WHEREAS, this day is celebrated on the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a commitment made by several nations to uphold the freedom of speech and access to information for all people; and

WHEREAS, a free and independent press is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy; and

WHEREAS, around the world, governments continue to threaten and attack journalists and erode the principles of free press and free speech; and

WHEREAS, this day acts as a reminder to our government of the need to respect the freedom of the press and to reflect on the state of free press in Delaware; and

WHEREAS, it is important to highlight Delaware Press Association, a network of journalists and communications experts who are dedicated to upholding the principles of free speech, on this special day; and

WHEREAS, 2023 will be the 30th anniversary of this special day.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that May 3, 2023, is recognized as "World Press Freedom Day" in Delaware.
