SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 81

RECOGNIZING AUGUST 26, 2023, AS "WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY” IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, women in the United States have continuously worked to gain full rights and privileges – public or private, legal or institutional – as citizens of the United States; and

WHEREAS, women in every state and every cultural and religious group have worked to secure women’s right to vote; and

WHEREAS, the 19 th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States granted women the right to vote and was ratified on August 26, 1920; and

WHEREAS, Delaware did not ratify the 19 th Amendment until March 6, 1923, approximately two-and-a-half years after the amendment had been ratified by three-fourths of the existing states of the United States; and

WHEREAS, in 1971, Representative Bella Abzug of New York championed a bill in the U.S. Congress to designate August 26 “Women’s Equality Day”; and

WHEREAS, Congress has designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day; and

WHEREAS, recognizing Women’s Equality Day as a day of celebration throughout the country emphasizes the importance of women’s work for democracy.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the General Assembly hereby recognizes August 26, 2023, as “Women’s Equality Day” in the State of Delaware.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all Delawareans are encouraged to join us in recognizing the contributions women have made in every aspect of life, and the sacrifices they have made to champion equality.
