HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 80

RECOGNIZING OUR COMMON HUMANITY AND OUR CONCERN REGARDING THE ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR.

WHEREAS, the attack on Israel by Hamas militants on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent incursion into Gaza by the Israeli military have resulted in catastrophic and heartbreaking losses of human life; and

WHEREAS, the State of Delaware has citizens with ties to the region who hold differing views on the politics of the war, but who share a common humanity; and

WHEREAS, while a state legislature is not an instrument of foreign policy, as a body, it can still declare its support for a long lasting and sustainable peace based on mutual respect and the unalienable rights of all people to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and to call upon people of goodwill to come together and build a more peaceful future; and

WHEREAS, we can make a start by recognizing that each Delawarean comes from diverse backgrounds, with their different social, religious, ethnic, cultural, educational backgrounds, adds value to all human experience; and

WHEREAS, we have a responsibility to build a tomorrow where all individuals can feel that they and their children will be safe, and cared for, and have a future with thoughtfulness and purpose; and

WHEREAS, the Delaware General Assembly has a responsibility to lead with moral and ethical conviction and to be respectful of all during a time of turmoil. Hate, and especially hate based on race, religion, ethnicity, and bigotry, has no place in our state.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that the General Assembly recognizes we are a state of neighbors, bound together by empathy, compassion, and a sense that we are stronger together. Our hearts go out to all who are suffering, here in Delaware and across the world.

SYNOPSIS

This concurrent resolution expresses the State of Delaware General Assembly’s concern for the loss of life in the Israel-Hamas war and calls on the legislature and the citizens of Delaware to recognize our common humanity and the shared strength of our diversity.
