SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 20
EXTENDING THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS TO THE STATE OF MARYLAND.
WHEREAS, the Francis Scott Key Bridge (Bridge) in Maryland carries Interstate 695 across the lower Patapsco River and outer Baltimore Harbor and Port; and
WHEREAS, named after the author of the “Star-Spangled Banner,” the 1.6 mile, 4-lane bridge is the second longest continuous truss bridge in the United States and third in the world; and
WHEREAS, the Bridge is critical to shipping on the East Coast, and the port’s private and public terminals handled the most of any Untied States port in 2023, including 847,158 automobiles and light trucks; and
WHEREAS, in the early morning hours of March 26, 2024, the container ship Dali impacted a support pillar on the Bridge, causing a failure of the center span leading to collapse; and
WHEREAS, vehicular traffic and construction crews were on the span at the time of collapse; and
WHEREAS, rescuers quickly were on the scene and rescued two individuals from the water; and
WHEREAS, as of the passage of this resolution, there are still individuals unaccounted for; and
WHEREAS, first responders from the State of Maryland and across the region have converged on the area to provide support.
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 152 nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware that the thoughts and prayers of the people of Delaware are extended to our sister state of Maryland, to the victims’ families, and to the first responders who are assisting with the search and recovery effort.
