DELAWARE STATE SENATE
153rd GENERAL ASSEMBLY
SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 90
DESIGNATING THE WEEK OF JUNE 9 - 15, 2025 AS "MEN'S HEALTH WEEK" IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.
WHEREAS, National Men’s Health Week was established in 1994 to develop a national men’s health awareness period as a special campaign to educate men, boys, and their families about the importance of positive health attitudes and preventative health practices; and
WHEREAS, National Men’s Health Week is celebrated each June by hundreds of states, cities, localities, public health departments, health care entities, churches, and community organizations throughout the Nation to promote awareness events focused on men’s health; and
WHEREAS, despite advances in medical technology and research, men continue to live an average of five years less than women with Native American and African American men having the lowest life expectancy; and
WHEREAS, 11.5% of men under the age of 65 are without health insurance coverage in the United States; and
WHEREAS, each year, thousands of men die from heart disease; prostate, testicular, and colon cancers; diabetes; and other serious health conditions; and
WHEREAS, according to the Center for Disease Control, 13.8% of men aged 18 and older report being in fair or poor health; and
WHEREAS, lifestyle and behavioral factors such as smoking, alcohol use, and drug consumption continue to significantly impact men’s health with 13.2% of men 18 and older actively smoking cigarettes; and
WHEREAS, most men report not being familiar with their family health history regarding key health risks further hindering early detection and intervention efforts; and
WHEREAS, 55% of men report not receiving regular health screenings demonstrating an urgent need to improve preventative health engagement across the country; and
WHEREAS, warning signs of these illnesses can often be detected in their early stages through preventative health exams and tests, allowing for timely treatment that may extend and improve many lives; and
WHEREAS, the Anxiety & Depression Association of America reports that 6 million men in the United States are affected by depression each year, and depression and suicide are among the leading causes of death in men; yet due to the stigma surrounding mental health, men are far less likely than women to seek treatment; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of Men's Health Week is to raise awareness of preventable health problems, encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys, and promote seeking help as a sign of strength; and
WHEREAS, the Men’s Health Month website, located at , offers resources and information about Men’s Health Week, including awareness events, activities, and Wear Blue for Men’s Health.
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 153rd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the week of June 9-15, 2025, is hereby designated as “Men’s Health Week” in the State of Delaware.
