149th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 67

RECOGNIZING JUNE 2018 AS NATIONAL SCOLIOSIS AWARENESS MONTH IN STATE OF DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that affects about 2% to 3% of the population, or an estimated 7 million people, in the United States, and strikes without regard to gender, race, age, or economic status; and

WHEREAS, it is important to increase the public’s awareness of scoliosis and help children, parents, adults, and health care providers understand, recognize, and treat the complexities of spinal deformities such as scoliosis; and

WHEREAS, an estimated 1 million scoliosis patients annually use health care, and 1 in 6 children diagnosed with the condition eventually requires active medical treatment; and

WHEREAS, the primary age of onset for scoliosis is between the ages of 10 and 15 years, with females being 5 times more likely to progress to a curve magnitude that requires treatment; and

WHEREAS, screening programs allow for early detection and treatment opportunities that may alleviate the worst effects of the condition; and

WHEREAS, respected organizations such as the Scoliosis Research Society; the National Scoliosis Foundation; the Delaware Academy of Medicine; and the Spine and Scoliosis Center, Nemours, Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children promote National Scoliosis Awareness Month; and

WHEREAS, National Scoliosis Awareness Month is observed across the country to renew the public’s commitment to understand and combat this disease, and to recognize the need for increased research and funding to reduce the pain and suffering it causes.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 149th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that June 2018 is recognized as National Scoliosis Awareness Month in the State of Delaware.
