149th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 76

RECOGNIZING THE STAFF AND LEADERSHIP OF THE DELAWARE DIVISION OF HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS UPON THE EARNING OF ACCREDITATION FROM THE AMERICAN ALLIANCE OF MUSEUMS FOR DELAWARE’S STATE MUSEUM SYSTEM AND COLLECTIONS.

WHEREAS, Delaware’s state museum system has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the highest recognition afforded to museums in the United States; and

WHEREAS , the system includes five museums as well as the archaeological and historic objects collections administered by the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, under the stewardship of the Department of State; and

WHEREAS, the accredited State museums include the John Dickinson Plantation near Kitts Hummock; the Johnson Victrola Museum and Old State House in downtown Dover; the New Castle Court House Museum; and the Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes; and

WHEREAS, of the nation’s estimated 33,000 museums, approximately 1,000 currently are accredited, including only two other museums in Delaware; and

WHEREAS, accreditation is a rigorous process that examines all aspects of a museum’s operations, requiring a year of self-study followed by a site visit from a team of peer reviewers and culminating with a full review by an independent and autonomous body of museum professionals; and

WHEREAS, the professionals employed in the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs worked with extreme diligence to meet or exceed the high standards required for accreditation of Delaware’s state museums and collections;

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 149th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the staff and leadership of the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs are recognized for their efforts in earning accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums for Delaware’s five state museums and collections of archeological and historic objects, and for their tireless work to preserve Delaware’s history for the benefit of future generations.

SYNOPSIS

This concurrent resolution recognizes the achievements and efforts of the staff of the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, who worked to earn accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums for Delaware’s state museums and collections, the highest recognition afforded to museums in the United States.
