HOUSE AMENDMENT NO. 1

TO

HOUSE BILL NO. 175

AMEND House Bill No. 175 on line 24 by deleing “ not “redeem” or “exchange” this” after “ may ” and before “ non-school ” therein and inserting in lieu thereof the following: “ not redeem or exchange this ”.

FURTHER AMEND House Bill No. 175 by deleting lines 25 through 31 in their entirety and inserting in lieu thereof the following: “ (3) Schools and school districts may not require students to provide advanced notice of an absence for a civic engagement event. Schools and school districts may require students to provide a written note from their parent or guardian documenting the excused absence after the absence has occurred. It is incumbent upon each school to determine what is acceptable, either a letter or email from the parent or guardian, or a form designed by the school or school district.” .

SYNOPSIS

This Amendment removes quotation marks around “redeem” and “exchange” in line 24. The Amendment also removes the requirement that a student’s parent or guardian provide prior written permission for a student to be absent from school to participate in a civic engagement. In place of the requirement to provide prior written permission, this Amendment allows schools and school districts to require students to provide a written note from their parent or guardian documenting the excused absence after the absence has occurred.
