HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

144th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 13

CONGRATULATING THE 2006-2007 DELAWARE STATE UNIVERSITY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM FOR THEIR FIRST NATIONAL TOURNAMENT CONTEST FOR A FEMALE TEAM IN DELAWARE STATE UNIVERSITY HISTORY.

WHEREAS, the Delaware State University (DSU) women’s basketball team captivated a national television audience with a hard-fought 62-47 loss to Southeastern Conference champion Vanderbilt in the opening round of the 2007 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament in East Lansing, MI.  It was the first national tournament contest for a female team in Delaware State University history; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Hornets, seeded 15th in the tournament’s Greensboro region, gave the #2 seeded Commodores all they could handle until late in the game; and

WHEREAS, Head Coach Ed Davis and valiant Lady Hornets held their heads high as they walked off the court to a standing ovation, while earning the respect of ESPN’s courtside and studio commentators; and

WHEREAS, the NCAA Tournament loss did nothing to take away the luster of Delaware State’s first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship eight days earlier; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Hornets swept past Norfolk State and Florida A&M before taking on upstart Morgan State in the MEAC title game; and

WHEREAS, “I am so proud of this team,” said Delaware State head coach Ed Davis, who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Coach.  “We had our share of ups and downs this season, but the team stuck together.  After coming up short in the title game a few times, this is especially sweet.”; and

WHEREAS, the 2006-2007 season began with nine newcomers and just four returning regulars from the team that fell to Coppin State in the 2006 MEAC championship; and

WHEREAS, Davis, who just completed his seventh season as head coach of the Lady Hornets, has a 123-86 record at DSU.  His .588 winning percentage is tops among all coaches in team history.

NOW, THEREFORE:

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 144th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that we hereby congratulate and commend the Lady Hornets of Delaware State University on their first national tournament contest for a female team in Delaware State University history.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that commendations are extended to Coach Ed Davis, all the Lady Hornet players, coaches and staff, and to the entire Delaware State University community.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that suitably prepared copies of this Resolution be presented upon its passage to Coach Ed Davis and to Dr. Allen L. Sessoms, President of the Delaware State University.
