SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 13 |
RECOGNIZING THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER. |
WHEREAS, The Southern Poverty Law Center has been a national leader in the fight for equality and justice; and
WHEREAS, The Southern Poverty Law Center has played a major role in enforcing our nation's civil rights laws through the courts, including integrating public facilities and institutions such as the Alabama State Police and the Alabama Legislature; and
WHEREAS, The Southern Poverty Law Center has won justice for exploited migrant workers, children with disabilities, prisoners incarcerated in brutal and inhumane conditions, victims of hate crimes and many others facing discrimination; and
WHEREAS, The Southern Poverty Law Center has put the United Klans of America and numerous other racist hate groups out of business by holding them legally accountable for violence committed by their members; and
WHEREAS, The Southern Poverty Law Center has been a leader in the fight against anti-Semitism in all its forms; and
WHEREAS, The Southern Poverty Law Center has provided critical intelligence and training to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to help them combat hate crime and domestic terrorism; and
WHEREAS, The Southern Poverty Law Center has investigated and exposed the activities of more than 2,000 hate groups, antigovernment militias and other extremist organizations; and
WHEREAS, The Southern Poverty Law Center has equipped hundreds of thousands of educators with documentary films, books, curricula and other resources to teach civil rights history and lessons of respect and tolerance to schoolchildren across the nation; and
WHEREAS, The Southern Poverty Law Center has built and operated the Civil Rights Memorial and the Civil Rights Memorial Center to honor the accomplishments and memory of those who died in the fight for equality during the civil rights movement;
NOW THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 146th General Assembly that the 40th Anniversary of the Southern Poverty Law Center be recognized in the State of Delaware and that the Center be honored for its tireless efforts in advancing civil rights in our Nation.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy will be sent to the Center upon its passage.
