SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 21

DECLARING JUNE 2013 DELAWARE DAIRY MONTH AND HONORING DELAWARE'S FARM CREAMERIES AND DAIRY FARMERS.

Whereas; June is celebrated as National Dairy Month each year; and

Whereas; One 8 ounce glass of milk contains 5 important, bone-building nutrients and helps controls blood pressure and maintains a healthy weight; and

Whereas; Milk is the #1 food source of three of four nutrients that Dietary Guidelines for Americans say adults and children need to consume more of—Vitamin D, Calcium and Potassium; and

Whereas; the average person consumes 584 pounds of dairy products each year; and

Whereas; Over $28 billion worth of milk are produced each year by the U.S. Dairy Industry and the total milk production in Delaware for 2012 was 92 million pounds, up 2% from the previous year; and

Whereas; in 1983 the General Assembly designated milk as the official state beverage of Delaware; and

Whereas; According to the University of Delaware, Milk sales rank fifth in agricultural receipts and at the top in the income of all livestock products except poultry; and

Whereas; Delaware Farm Bureau Foundation and the New Castle County Farm Bureau are sponsoring a 5K Milk Run/Walk on June 1^st, 2013 at the Appoquinimink High School in Middletown, De with the proceeds providing milk for underprivileged children serviced through the Ministry of Caring.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 147^th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House concurring therein, that the month of June 2013 be declared DELAWARE DAIRY MONTH and hereby honors Delaware’s farm creameries; Woodside Farm Creamery; Hopkins Farm Creamery; Vanderwende Farm Creamery; and the University of Delaware Creamery as well as the following dairy farmers throughout the state:
