AN ACT DESIGNATING AND NAMING THE PORTION OF U.S. ROUTE 301 COMMENCING AT DELAWARE ROUTE 1 AND TERMINATING AT THE DELAWARE MARYLAND STATE LINE AS FIRST RESPONDERS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY.
WHEREAS, a first responder is a person with specialized training who is among the first to arrive and provide assistance at the scene of an emergency, such as an accident, natural disaster, or terrorist attack; and
WHEREAS, first responders include ground and air ambulance services, fire services, county paramedic services, law enforcement agencies, local and state EMS agencies, and other governmental and voluntary organizations; and
WHEREAS, first responders are focused on improving the quality of life for the citizens of and visitors to Delaware by reducing morbidity and mortality rates and to ensure the delivery of high quality emergency care services; and
WHEREAS, Delaware’s first responders field calls daily for shootings, robberies, overdoses, and domestic violence; and
WHEREAS, their jobs also entail rescuing trapped ducklings and dogs stuck in the mud, assisting residents locked out of their homes, pulling people to safety on Delaware waterways, and ensuring that the community feels safe approaching them for help; and
WHEREAS, in view of the tireless dedication and emergency actions of all First Responders and their commitment to the betterment of our State, it is appropriate and fitting for the State of Delaware to honor our First Responders by naming the Delaware portion of U.S. Route 301 as “First Responders Memorial Highway”.
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF DELAWARE:
Section 1. The portion of U.S. Route 301 commencing at Route 1 and terminating at the Delaware Maryland State line shall henceforth be known as “First Responders Memorial Highway”.
Section 2. The Department of Transportation is authorized and directed to take the appropriate action necessary to implement the provisions of this act.
