STATE OF DELAWARE

EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT

PROCLAMATION

Whereas, our existence as a free people began in the City of Philadelphia in the Year 1776 with the signing of the Declaration of Independence; and

Whereas, this nation has dedicated itself to the commemoration of the most significant date in its history by means of a Bicentennial Celebration in the Year 1976; and

Whereas, Delaware, by casting the decisive vote which determined adoption of the Declaration of Independence, has from the beginning assumed a progressive role in our Country's his tory; and

Whereas, the First State shares with the entire Delaware Valley area the honor bestowed upon the City of Philadelphia by its designation by the President of the United States as the International Exposition Site during the Bicentennial; and

Whereas, the commitment of the First State, with others of the historic Delaware Valley area, to the success of the Bicenten nial observances will provide an example now, as in earlier hi s tory, for the rest of the Nation to follow;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Russell W. Peterson, Governor of the State of Delaware, do hereby proclaim the week of November 2228, 1970, as

BICENTENNIAL WEEK

in Delaware and urge all residents of the First State, as indi viduals and as members of community organizations, to work together in every way possible to ensure the successful and meaningful accomplishment of the observance of the two hundredth year of our freedom.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I, Russell W. Peterson, Governor of the State of Delaware, have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the said State to be hereunto affixed at Dover this eighteenth day of November in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and seventy, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the one hundred and ninety-fifth.
