s,
this year
marks
the three
hundred
and thirty-second anniversary of the settling and establishment of the
Colony
of New
Swe
den
in 1638
at "The
Rocks," now
enshrined at
Fort Christina
Monument
in
the City
of Wilmington;
and
Whereas, founded
under
the
leadership of the intrepid Pet
er
Minuit,
Fort
Christina
became
the seat
of
the
fir
st
permanent settlement
in
the State of Delaware as well as in the entire Delaware River Valley; and
Whereas,
this settlement
marked
the
introduction
of govern
ment, religion,
education,
agriculture, commerce, and industry
to
our
State;
and
Whereas,
Title
29,
Cha
p
ter
21,
Section
2109
of
the Delaware Code, directs the Governor to proclaim March
29
of
each
year as
"De
laware
Swedish Colonial
Day" in
recognition
of
these events;
Now

therefore,
I, Russell W. Peterson,
Governor of
the State
of

and request
that
on this
day, and the days following,
our

settlement
upon
the

of the
State
of
Del
awa
re
wit
h
appropriate cerem
o
n
ies.
I
further request State,
County, City and
Town
Govern
me
nts
to
display
the flags of the United States
and
of
the
State of Del
a
ware on
s
uch occasions;
and
that
the flags
of the United States
and
the Kingdom of Sweden be
flown at the
Fort
Christina
Monument during
the
period of observance.
