PROCLAMATION

Whereas, the quality of our life is threatened by the growing pollution of our environment; and

Whereas, to meet this threat the general public must develop a consciousness that will enable each person to respect the complex interdependent processes that sustain life on this planet; and

Whereas, this will require a massive educational effort and cooperation among all citizens of Delaware; and

Whereas, I have been requested by Delaware students to set aside one day to be devoted to assessing our environmental problems and formulating plans for concerted citizen action to improve our environment;

Now, therefore, I, Russell W. Peterson, Governor of the State of Delaware, do hereby declare Wednesday, April 22, 1970, as

EARTH DAY

in The First State and urge all schools, civic and fraternal org anizations to participate in activities appropriate to this significant event; and

Whereas, the increasing amount of refuse manufactured by and thoughtlessly discarded by man mars the beauty of our State and cannot be organically absorbed by nature; I further declare Saturday, April 25, 1970, as

CLEANUP DAY

throughout the State of Delaware and urge every citizen to take an active part on this day to clean up trash from our highways, woodlands, streams, cities and towns.
