PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the Continental Congress, on June 14
,
1777
,
officially adopted a banner of thirteen alternate stripes of red and white and a field of blue with one star for each state to be our national emblem; and
Whereas, ever since that date the Stars and Stripes has served as a symbol of our unity and determination to remain free and as a symbol of hope to people the world over; and
Whereas, tradition has it that this Fl

first unfurled in land battle at Cooch's Bridge, Delaware, i
n
early S
e
ptember 1777, and in succeeding years thousands of Delawareans ha
v
e fought, and many peri
s
hed
,
to keep this flag flying high; and
Whereas, since December 7, 1787 the first star of this emblem represents Delaware's position as The First State; and
Whereas, the
a
nnual celebration of National Fl
a
g Week affords us an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the assurance that our Flag will w
a
ve forever a
s
the symbol of "one Nation, under God, indivisible,
w
i
t
h libert
y a
nd justice for all."
Now, therefore, I, Russell W. Peterson, Governor of the State of Delaware, do hereby proclaim Sunday, June 14, 1970 as
NATIONAL FLAG DAY
and the week of June 14-20, 1970 as
NATIONAL FLAG WEEK
in Delaware, and urge all residents of The First State to properly display the American Flag daily. This display along with
participation
in appropriate ceremonies gives visible evidence
of our loyalty
to this Nation and all that "Old Glory" so proudly
represents.
