CHAPTER 381 - STATE OF DELAWARE - EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT PROCLAMATION
Since the days when this nation was a mere handful of colonists struggling to eke out a bare existence, the recognition of Almighty God by the giving of thanks has been a real and vital part of our national experience.
Now, again, we come to the time of accounting and we find the record to be good. The earth has yielded her increase and there is food for our people, and much more to be shared with those who are less fortunate than we. Production lines have ceaselessly hummed to greater and greater goals of achievement. Success after success has crowned our efforts both at home, and on the battlefields of the world.
But beyond these earthly blessings stands the fact of the indomitable spirit of a victorious people--a spirit which, through hours of anguish and sorrow, has not shirked the responsibilities of freedom under law.
For all this, and more, we turn in gratitude to Him Who is the Source of all good things.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Walter W. Bacon, Governor of the State of Delaware, do hereby set apart and proclaim
THURSDAY, THE TWENTY-THIRD DAY OF NOVEMBER, A. D. 1944, AS A
DAY OF THANKSGIVING
and urge our people to observe the day in every proper manner. In the home, in the office, in the shop, and in our respective places of worship, let us acknowledge with thanksgiving our dependence upon our Creator, and let us pray that He may lead us speedily to that day when nations shall lay down their arms and our people shall have the opportunity once again to use our many talents to help bind up the world's wounds, to follow the pursuits of peace, and to make our nation great in all noble undertakings. Let the flags of our State and our Nation be displayed in all proper and suitable places.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand, and affixed the Great Seal of the State of Delaware, at Dover, this fourteenth day of November, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and forty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the one hundred and sixty-ninth.
