AN ACT TO RENAME THE NEWARK REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION CENTER IN HONOR OF UNITED STATES SENATOR THOMAS R. CARPER.
WHEREAS, Thomas R. Carper moved to Newark, Delaware in 1973 to pursue a Master’s of Business Administration degree from the University of Delaware after completing three tours of duty as a Naval Flight Officer in southeast Asia during the Vietnam War; and
WHEREAS, Thomas R. Carper began a lifetime of service to the people of Delaware who elected him State Treasurer at age 29; and
WHEREAS, Thomas R. Carper would go on to be elected to statewide office a total of 14 times, more than any other Delawarean in the First State, as U.S. Representative, Governor, and U.S. Senator; and
WHEREAS, during more than 45 years of service to the people of Delaware, Thomas R. Carper has been a tireless advocate for passenger rail as a member of Congress, member of the Amtrak Board of Directors, and as a frequent rider of Amtrak, commuting almost daily from Wilmington to Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, his commitment to passenger rail is founded in his support of environmental protection, economic development, and job creation; and
WHEREAS, Senator Carper helped facilitate the purchase of the former Newark Chrysler Assembly Plant by the University of Delaware to transform it into the STAR Campus with ready access to passenger rail.
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF DELAWARE:
Section 1. The Newark Regional Transportation Center is hereby renamed the “Thomas R. Carper Station”.
Section 2. Appropriate signs shall be placed on and around the Newark Regional Transportation Center to reflect that it is the “Thomas R. Carper Station”.
