Whereas,
on
November 11, 1918,
an armistice terminated hostilities in World War I; and
Whereas, in the

ears
that followed, this date
was set aside
each year to commemorate the sacrifice of those who
lost
their
live
s
in
that conflict; and
Whereas, by an
Act
of
Congress
of
June 1, 1954
,
the name
was
changed to
Veterans' Da
y
and its
observance expanded to include tribute to all
men
and women who, as
members
of our Armed Forces, participated
in the
defense of our
Nation;
a
nd
Whereas,
Title 1
,
Section
501 of the
Delaware
Code, sets aside the eleventh of November as
a
legal
holiday
in the State of
Delaware;
NOW
,
THEREFORE, I, Ru
sse
ll W. Peterson, Governor of
the State of Delaware,
do hereby
proclaim November
11, 1970,
as
VETERAN'S DAY
in Delaware
and
urge residents of
the
First State
to
honor those
who
have
served
our
Country
in
the cause of
freedom.
I request that the American and
Dela
war
e
flags be properly displayed on
a
ll
State buildings and
institutions
on this day and urge all patriotic, veterans and community organizations
to
observe this
day
with
appropriate ceremonies.
Further, I
encourage all
residents of the State of Delaware
to
meet
with
our
neighbors from New
Jerse
y
for annual Veterans' Day exercises
to be held
at
the Delaware
Memorial
Bridge
Plaza,
Sunday, November 8, 1970
