CHAPTER 40

Of Valuation of Property.

AN ACT TO EXEMPT FROM TAXATION THE LANDS, TENEMENTS AND PROPERTY OF CORPORATIONS ORGANIZED FOR THE PURPOSE OF CARRYING ON "SETTLEMENT WORK."

Whereas, The Peoples Settlement Association, a corporation of this State, has for a number of years carried on in the City of Wilmington the -work of providing a center for a higher civic and social life, by instituting and maintaining educational and philanthropic movements, and investigating and improving the social conditions in the industrial districts, which efforts and operations are known as "Settlement Work ;" and

Whereas, Other corporations are likely to be organized for similar purposes throughout the State; and

Whereas, Such corporations are likely to be largely supported and maintained by voluntary contributions;

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Delaware in General Assembly met:

Section I. That the lands, tenements and property of all corporations of this State, incorporated, organized and carried on for the purpose of "Settlement Work," and maintained in whole or in part by charity, shall be exempt from any and all county and municipal taxes, during such time and to the extent that such lands, tenements and property shall be actually used by such corporations in such "Settlement Work," Provided, that said exemption shall not apply to any lands, tenements and property owned by such corporations as investments and not actually used by such corporations in such "Settlement Work."
